Tomasz Cyz, born in 1977 in Tarnów, is a director, essayist and editor. He is also an author of opera and music performances: Sciarrino’s Luci mie traditrici (Poznań, 2009), Dvořák’s Rusalka (Łódź, 2010), Prokofiev’s Maddalena (Poznań, 2011), Penderecki’s Passion – Fragments of St. Luke Passion (Warsaw, 2013), Kreutzer Sonata (Zakopane, 2013), Pärt’s Passio (Cracow 2015), Händel’s Rodelinda (Collegium Nobilium Theatre, October 2015), My Name Is Human (Warsaw 2016), Lament/Il Pianto (Warsaw 2017). He was the director of premiere performances of plays by Justyna Bargielska: Clarissima about Clara Schumann (Zakopane, 2014) and My First Death in Venice according to Thomas Mann (Dramatic Theatre in Warsaw, 2015), as well as Gospel according to Nabu by Jarosław Mikołajewski (Theatre Institute, 2016). He also directed Sarah Kane’s Phaedra’s Love (New Theatre in Poznań, June 2016), After the Exile based on poems by Czesław Miłosz (New Theatre in Cracow, June 2017). He is an author of radio plays: The Rhine Daughters based on the play by Cecile Løveid about Hildegard of Bingen (Radio Theatre Warsaw / Programme 2 of the Polish Radio, February 2015), Zuzanna about Zuzanna Ginczanka based on the script by Jarosław Mikołajewski (June 2016, Big Book Festival in Warsaw), The Gates of Paradise according to Jerzy Andrzejewski, co-author of the cycle „Do ucha” [In the Ear] of the Literature City Foundation of the Cracow as part of which he prepared radio plays based on works by Wisława Szymborska, Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki and Czesław Miłosz. He is the creator of the performative project called Ginczanka’ Room (Big Book Festival in Warsaw, June 2016). He produced performative readings of the following plays: Wolfgang Amadeus Moz. by Michał Bajer featuring (among others) Agata Zubel (Wrocław Contemporary Theatre, June 2016), Holzwege by Marta Sokołowska (W. Siemaszkowa Theatre in Rzeszów, Vovember 2016), Fifi by Arnold Szyfman (Polidh Theatre in Warsaw, November 2016), Kłopoty ze spadkiem [Problems with Inheritance] based on the detective story by Antoni Marczyński (Polish Theatre in Warsaw, June 2017), The Return of Odysseus by S. Wyspiański (New Theatre in Cracow, November 2017). In the period of 2009-2013, he was the editor-in-chief of dwutygodnik.com, and since 2013 he has been the editor-in-chief of the monthly magazine “Ruch Muzyczny”, he is also a member of the editorial team of “Zeszyty Literackie”. He is an author of the following books about music and opera: Arioso (2007), Powroty Dionizosa (2008), Pasja 20, 21. Powroty Chrystusa (2012). Jako “T.”; he wrote the libretto for the opera Phaedra by Dobromiła Jaskot (Grand Theatre – National Opera, 2006), and was a playwright for Mariusz Treliński and the National Opera.
